Superbug Outbreak Reported at Second California Hospital

More than 70 patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, were exposed to carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) between August 2014 and February 2015.

California health officials have reported that these patients were exposed to the antibiotic-resistant “superbug” during endoscopic procedures at the hospital, much like an outbreak of CRE reported at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center last month. Four cases of CRE have been linked to Cedars-Sinai so far.

Right now it is limited to patients that have undergone the endoscopic procedure but we will keep and eye on it.

EPA Unveils New Chemical Labeling System

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a new voluntary labeling system for household chemical products.

The label system, known as “Safer Choice,” was designed by the EPA in conjunction with chemical manufacturers and environmental and health advocates. Similar to the EPA’s previous Design for the Environment—or DfE—program, chemicals are evaluated based on health implications as well as environmental impact. In addition to health and environmental concerns, the Safer Choice label system also sets standards for performance and packaging.

Bullen will be updating all of our DfE Safer Choice products with their new logo and GHS info in the coming weeks.
