Richards H. “Dix” Jarden, a self-described salesman with a deep work ethic and a love for the details of things, died February 18, 2017 at The Meadows at Shannondell in Audubon, PA. He was 96.
Dix (a nickname created by a high-school girlfriend to acknowledge the S in Richards) joined his father in business with the Franklin Research Company in Philadelphia, manufacturing specialty cleaning products. In the 1960s, as company president, when Franklin Research was sold to the Purex Corporation, he resigned to create an independent business and in 1963 purchased a tiny, struggling manufacturing plant in Folcroft, PA, The Bullen Chemical Company, for $10. The Bullen Companies, still in Folcroft, now employs 41 people. Following a family tradition, his son Scott joined the business in 1969 and is now its president. Dix continued to be actively involved and was working on drafts for sales bulletins until two weeks before his death. Both he and Scott served as presidents of the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), Dix in 1984 and Scott in 2011. Dix was awarded the Jack D. Ramaley Distinguished Service Award in 1990.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a scholarship fund established in his name and mailed to the ISSA Foundation, Richards H. Jarden Fund, 3300 Dundee Rd., Northbrook, IL 60062.
