SSB 8/16/26: “Are you ready for the first storm?”

Blog

It is coming!

Labor Day isn’t here yet and it may still feel like summer, but for anyone in the cleaning and facility maintenance business, it should also serve as a reminder: winter is coming, and now is the time to prepare.

Once the first snow or ice storm appears in the forecast, everyone suddenly needs the same things at the same time. Ice melt, calcium chloride, liquid ice melt, shovels, spreaders, entrance matting and other winter supplies can quickly become harder to find.

Good salespeople don’t wait for the first freeze. They start talking to their customers now.

Ask your customers what they have left from last season. Do they have enough ice melt? Are their spreaders and shovels still usable? Do they have a plan for entrances, sidewalks and parking areas?

And don’t forget what happens after the ice is gone. Ice melt and calcium chloride get tracked into buildings, leaving behind that familiar white, chalky residue on floors and entrance areas. Products specifically designed to remove and neutralize ice-melt residue—like our WinterRinse—should be part of the winter program, not an afterthought.

This is also a good opportunity to talk about entrance matting, wet-floor signage, floor care products and equipment. Winter isn’t just a snow-and-ice problem; it’s a floor maintenance and safety problem.

3. How to Disinfect Properly
Clean first: Remove dirt, dust, and organic material
Apply disinfectant liberally to surfaces
Follow dwell time: Let the product sit wet on the surface for the amount of time listed on the label (usually 1–10 minutes)
Air out rooms: Measles can linger in the air for hours, so proper ventilation is key
Focus on high-touch surfaces: doorknobs, light switches, chairs, handrails, remote controls, and countertops
