Should We Be Worried About Ebola?

Recent reports of Ebola cases in parts of Africa have once again raised questions about whether Americans should be concerned. The good news is that the risk of a widespread Ebola outbreak in the United States remains extremely low. Ebola is not an airborne disease and requires direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, making it much more difficult to spread than viruses like influenza or COVID-19.

That said, Ebola serves as an important reminder of the interconnected world we live in. International travel can bring diseases across borders, and healthcare systems must remain vigilant. For those of us in the cleaning and infection prevention industries, it reinforces the importance of proper cleaning, disinfection, hand hygiene, and infection control protocols that protect people from a wide range of pathogens—not just the ones making headlines.

While there is no reason for panic, there is every reason to stay informed. Preparedness, education, and proven infection prevention practices remain our best defense against both current and emerging health threats.

Air out rooms: Measles can linger in the air for hours, so proper ventilation is key
Focus on high-touch surfaces: doorknobs, light switches, chairs, handrails, remote controls, and countertops
