Father’s Day originated in the United States, but it is now celebrated in many countries around the world, though often on different dates and with varying traditions.
Origin in the U.S.
-
The first known Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington, initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd. She wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent.
-
The idea gained popularity slowly, and it wasn’t until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a national holiday, celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June.
Timeline Comparison:
Mother’s Day (U.S.)
-
Founded: Officially in 1908 by Anna Jarvis in West Virginia.
-
Recognized Nationally: In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
-
Purpose: To honor mothers and the sacrifices they make for their children.
-
Father’s Day (U.S.)
-
First Celebrated: 1910 in Spokane, Washington, promoted by Sonora Smart Dodd.
-
Why the Delay for Father’s Day?
-
It was initially seen as less important or sentimental.
-
Commercial interests didn’t push it as strongly until much later.
-
There was even resistance from men who saw it as too sentimental or unnecessary.
-
Took Longer to Become Official: Though celebrated locally, it wasn’t made a national holiday until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law.
Sounds like we can thank Mother’s Day for Father’s Day

3. How to Disinfect Properly
Clean first: Remove dirt, dust, and organic material
Apply disinfectant liberally to surfaces
Follow dwell time: Let the product sit wet on the surface for the amount of time listed on the label (usually 1–10 minutes)
Air out rooms: Measles can linger in the air for hours, so proper ventilation is key
Focus on high-touch surfaces: doorknobs, light switches, chairs, handrails, remote controls, and countertops
